Sauna Svartisen, located within the wilderness of Northern Norway, is a contemporary architectural marvel seamlessly built-in into the Arctic panorama. Its design, characterised by simplicity and minimalism, presents a sanctuary from the tough components whereas extending a discreet connection to its pristine environment. Positioned in a small valley opening towards the Svartisen glacier, Norway’s second-largest glacier, the journey to the sauna is a deliberate exploration into the center of the Arctic wilderness, making a harmonious dialogue between human creation and nature.
The constructing’s plan options 4 squares organized in a linear grid. Two central squares, nestled in a valley, kind the core housing the sauna and a flexible hangout space and altering room. The top squares present shelter for having fun with the setting, with the complete construction suspended from a roof supported by slender columns that minimally contact the bottom, lowering the environmental footprint.
The sauna presents two entrances: the primary, that includes a sloping ramp, ensures accessibility and results in a boardwalk extending the hangout house. The second entrance serves as the first axis, treating guests to a panoramic view of the glacier, creating a way of anticipation and awe. This central axis features as the primary circulation route, connecting numerous areas.
The sauna room embraces timeless Finnish sauna traditions, accommodating as much as twelve guests with strategically positioned home windows framing picturesque glacier views. Cork is built-in into the sauna’s design, offering tender and insulating backrests, enhancing the house’s texture and character. A small hangout space presents an area to chill down and luxuriate in views whereas remaining protected against the weather. The altering room, although uncovered, supplies a completely enclosed house with benches and cabinets. The ground, adorned with stones rising organically, seamlessly follows the panorama’s contours, reinforcing integration with the setting.
Constructed from sustainable, regionally sourced supplies equivalent to spruce and stones from the environment, Sauna Svartisen pays homage to conventional Norwegian preservation strategies. The constructing’s end, a mix of linseed oil, tar, and charcoal, provides to its distinctive character and dedication to environmentally aware design.
